Filtration
The process of eliminating undesirable low-energy x-ray photons by inserting absorbing materials into the primary beam.
Inherent Filtration
Filtration that is a result of the composition of the x-ray tube and housing.
Added Filtration
Any filtration that occurs outside the x-ray tube and housing and before the image receptor.
Compensating Filter
A filter designed to solve problems involving unequal subject densities by adding an absorber.
Total Filtration
The sum of inherent and added filtration, excluding any compound or compensating filters.
Half-Value Layer (HVL)
The amount of absorbing material that reduces the intensity of the primary beam to one-half its original value.
Compound Filter
A filter using two or more materials that complement each other in absorbing capacities.
Thoraeus Filter
A specific type of compound filter used in radiation therapy that combines tin, copper, and aluminum.
Wedge Filter
A compensating filter useful for procedures on the thoracic spine and the feet.
Trough Filter
A compensating filter used to equalize density differences between mediastinum and lungs on a chest radiograph.
