aerobic metabolism
The cellular process in which oxygen is used to metabolize glucose efficiently, producing minimal waste products.
anaerobic metabolism
The cellular process in which glucose is metabolized for energy without oxygen, resulting in inefficient energy production and many waste products.
cardiac output
The amount of blood ejected from the heart in one minute, calculated as heart rate multiplied by stroke volume.
chemoreceptors
Chemical sensors in the brain and blood vessels that detect changing levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
dead air space
Air that occupies the space between the mouth and alveoli but does not reach the area of gas exchange.
dehydration
An abnormally low amount of water in the body.
diaphoresis
Sweating; a condition characterized by cool, pale, and moist/sweaty skin.
