Acetabulum
The socket in the pelvis that accommodates the head of the femur, forming the hip joint.
Angle of Inclination (AoI)
The angle between the neck and shaft of the femur, typically measuring between 125° to 139° in adults.
Coxa Valga
A condition characterized by an increased angle of inclination greater than 140°.
Coxa Vara
A condition characterized by a decreased angle of inclination less than 125°.
Hip Labrum
A ring of cartilage that surrounds the acetabulum, enhancing joint stability and distributing loads.
Ligamentum Teres
A ligament that connects the acetabulum to the fovea capitis of the femur, playing a crucial role in hip stability.
Femoral Neck
The section of the femur that connects the head of the femur to the body of the femur.
Hip Flexors
Muscles that function to flex the hip joint, including the iliopsoas and rectus femoris.
Hip Extensors
Muscles primarily responsible for extending the hip, with the gluteus maximus being the strongest.
Hip Abduction
The movement of the thigh away from the midline of the body.
Hip Adductors
Muscles that function to bring the thigh back toward the midline, including the adductor longus, brevis, and magnus.
Femoral Circumflex Arteries
Arteries that supply blood to the femoral head and neck, crucial for maintaining the viability of the femoral head.
Gait Mechanics
The study of body movement and mechanics during walking or running involving lower limb kinematics.
Bursae of Hip
Fluid-filled sacs that reduce friction between tissues. Major bursae include the greater trochanteric bursa and iliopsoas bursa.
Differential Diagnosis (Dx)
The process of distinguishing between two or more conditions that share similar signs or symptoms.
Arthroplasty
Surgical procedure to restore function in the joint, often involving replacement of the hip joint.
Cam Deformity
A bony growth on the femoral head that can lead to hip impingement.
Pincer Deformity
A condition where the acetabular rim is overgrown, leading to compression of the femoral head.
Hip Dysfunction
An impairment of normal hip joint function, which can lead to pain, restricted range of motion, and abnormal movement patterns.
Surgical Complications
Potential adverse effects that may occur as a result of surgical procedures, including infection, DVT, and bleeding.
