TERMS
Annealing to heat then cool, which results in a softened tube which is flexible
Soldering is a method of joining where an alloy is added between the layers
• Soft soldering temperatures below 575 Celsius
• Brazing temperatures above 575 Celsius
Different than
Metal Fabrication
• Hard temper tube
• The rigidity of the tube resists sagging
and deflection
• Soft temper tube
• The flexibility of the annealed tube
allows manipulation through holes
Cu
copper pipe tube and tubing
• Billets of copper are used to manufacture
the pipe, tube and tubing
• Main advantages of copper over steel
• Malleability
• Ductility
• Good resistance to corrosion
• Approximately 20% better flow capacity
Copper Alloys
• Red brass, Yellow brass and Bronze
• Red brass = 85%Cu 15%zinc
• Yellow brass = 66%Cu 34%zinc
• Bronze = 90%Cu 10%tin
• The more zinc there is in the alloy
the harder wearing it is, While the
more copper there is the more
resistant to corrosion
An analogy you can use to remember the different alloys and their percentages
There can only be one (Z that is in each of the alloys)
Red brass = copper and Zinc
Quantity of zinc matches color
Yellow brass = copper and Zinc
BronZe = copper and tin
Red has less letters less Zinc 15%
Yellow more letters more Zinc 34%
Copper Pipe
Copper Tube
Has the same wall
thickness’s as iron pipe
(Std, XS, XXS)
Sized by NPS up to and
including 12”
By OD for 14” and over
Sized by ID or NPS
And categorized by
Grades
Copper tubing
Thinner walls and come in
two standard WT
(0.028” and 0.032”)
Sized by WT and OD
Come’s in soft temper
coils only
COLOR CODING
Analogy
• Type K – Green
• Type L – Blue
• Type M – Red
• Type H –White
• Type DWV - Yellow
• Type K – Kermit the frog is green
• Type L – Labbat blue beer
• Type M – Murder leaves red blood
• Type H – Hospitals are white
• Type D waste V – The Waste(pee) is
yellow
JOINING METHODS
Soldered
Solder fittings are available in DWV
and Pressure applications.
The only difference is the cup size,
Both applications have a pressure
rating
Compression
Nuts come in two styles (Std, Long)
Sometimes knowns as flareless or
sleeve type
Flared
The most common angle for Flared
