The study of citizenship and government

Citizen

A legally recognized member of a country

Government

The people who exercise political authority over its citizens

Immigrants

People who came here from other countries

Quota

A specific number of immigrants from certain countries allowed in each year

Aliens

Permanent residents of the United States who are still citizens of another country

Native-born

Born in the United States

Naturalization

The legal process by which an alien may become a citizen

Equality, liberty and justice

Responsibilities

Things you SHOULD do, such as vote, stay informed, and volunteer

Census

Population count every 10 years

American Dream

Better schools, more success, and more opportunity

U.S. Constitution

"The supreme law of the land."

Melting Pot

Society in which people of different nationalities assimilate to form one American culture

Salad Bowl

Society in which people from different countries keep their culture and don't blend in

Democracy

Government by the people

Republic

Government that has representatives

Civic Duty

A moral or legal obligation that you MUST do

Refugee

Person who flees to another country to escape persecution or disaster

Visa

A permit or card that allows you to stay in our country for work or education temporarily
