What are cells?
Cells are the smallest and most basic unit of life that can support all characteristics of living things.
What are all living things made up of?
All living things are made up of one or more cells.
Where do all cells come from?
All cells come from other cells.
Recall the cell theory.
All living things are made up of one or more cells
The cell is the basic unit of life
All cells come from other cells
What is a eukaryote?
A eukaryote are organisms that cells have a nucleus. It can be single celled organisms, or multicellular organisms.
What is a prokaryote?
A prokaryote are single celled organisms that do not have a nucleus. They consist of bacteria and archaea.
What are microorganisms?
Micro organisms are any living thing that is too small to see with the naked eye.
Where can microorganisms be found?
Microorganisms can be found in the air, in the water, and on plants and animals.
List the four main types of microorganisms.
Monera (bacteria)
Protists ( found in water)
Fungi (mould)
Viruses
What are the characteristics of living bacteria?
Asexual Reproduction
Large (use light microscope)
Cell wall
Single-celled
Single chromosome
Harmful & beneficial
Localized infections (food poisoning, pneumonia)
Treated with antibiotics
What are the characteristics of non-living viruses?
Needs a host to replicate DNA
Small (use electron microscope)
Protein coat
Non-cellular
DNA/RNA strand
Harmful
Systematic infections (AIDS, flu, COVID-19)
Treated with vaccines.
What characteristics do bacteria and viruses share?
Microscopic
Causes infections
7 characteristics of all living things.
Have a lifespan
Grows (in size, reproduces, and repairs itself)
Consents and respond to changes in their environment/stimuli (able to move)
Requires energy (nutrition/photosynthesis)
Produces waste
Made up of cells
Respiration (exchange gases with environment)
For the cells structure, what is made up of?
Cells are made up of organelles.
What are organelles?
Organelles are cell structure that perform specific functions for the cell.
Describe the shape of a animal cell, and a plant cell.
Animal: round and spherical
Plant: rigid and rectangular
Describe the cell membrane.
