lumber cuts
how lumber is sawn determines the appearance of the grain of the wood. it also affects the drying characteristics of the wood. cabinetmakers/carpenters must become familiar with it.
edge grain orquarter sawn lumber
cut in quartes then each quarter is sliced into baords. this produces lumber which has the annual growth ring at right angles to its face. this cutting process produces lukber which tends to shrink and swell less in width
flat grain or plain saw lumber
this lumber has a coarser grain than edge grain lumber. you should note that the cut through the centre of the logs produces and edge grain board.
cross grain
both edge and flat grain lumber the wood fibers run the length of the board.
