Define approach lighting
Lighting that helps pilots to align their aircraft with the runway. Vary based on approach.
Define runway touchdown zone lighting
Lights that identify the touchdown zone for landing. Are unidirectional, showing only in the direction of approach to landing.
Define runway threshold lights
Lights that are placed across the ends of a runway or landing strip to indicate its usable limits.
Define runway end lights
Fixed unidirectional lights located near the runway extremity and showing red in the direction of the runway.
Define runway edge lights
Lights that appear at the runway edges along the full length of the runway, except at intersections with other runways or taxiways
Define runway centreline lighting
Facilitate landing when visibility is obscured
Define runway threshold identification lights (RTILs)
Required when the terrain does not allow for the installation of approach lights, or where other lighting conditions reduce the effects of approach lights.
Often used in marginal or reduced visibility conditions.
Types of taxiway lighting
Taxiway edge lights in blue
Intersection of taxiway and apron lights in yellow
Centreline taxiway lights in green
Define rapid-exit taxiway lighting
To reduce the aircraft runway occupancy time, some airports provide rapid-exit taxiways that are lit in alternating green and yellow lights.
What factor affects lighting configurations?
If the runway has precision or non-precision approach
