• Immobility

• Reduced muscle pumping

• Venous stasis

• Paralysis

• Reduced lower-extremity movement

What are common signs of DVT?

• Swelling

• Pain

• Tenderness

• Warmth

• Usually affects one lower extremity

What should the therapist do if DVT is suspected?

• Stop treatment

• Avoid active movement of involved limb

• Avoid passive movement of involved limb

• Seek medical evaluation

• Do not massage the extremity

How can DVT risk be reduced in SCI?

• Anticoagulation when medically indicated

• Positioning program

• ROM/mobility as medically appropriate
