Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
Infectious diseases spread through sexual contact, also called sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
Bacterial STIs
Infections caused by bacteria, such as Chlamydia and Gonorrhea, that can lead to reproductive health issues.
Chlamydia
The most common bacterial STI in the US, caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, often asymptomatic.
Gonorrhea
A bacterial infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, known for causing urethritis and potentially serious complications if untreated.
Syphilis
A bacterial infection caused by Treponema pallidum, characterized by stages including primary lesions, latent disease, and possible tertiary syphilis.
Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
A group of over 40 viruses; the most common STI in the US, linked to genital warts and several forms of cancer.
Genital Herpes
Caused by the herpes simplex virus; characterized by recurrent blister-like lesions and no cure, only management.
Prostate Cancer
The third most common cause of cancer death in males in the US, often asymptomatic in early stages.
Breast Cancer
The second most common cancer in US females, arising from breast epithelial cells and associated with various risk factors.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
A serious condition in females caused by STIs, leading to infertility and other complications.
