What could the loss of lordosis or the presence of kyphosis suggest?
Ankylosing spondylitis.
What is lordosis?
inward curve of the lumbar spine
What is kyphosis?
Outward curve of the thoracic spine.
What is ankylosing spondylitis?
A type of arthritis affecting the spine
What is scoliosis?
Sideways curvature of the spine
When can scoliosis be spotted?
From behind or when the patient bends forward
Why do you palpate the spinous processes of all the vertebrae, and the paravertebral muscles?
To find tenderness.
What are paravertebral muscles?
Muscles that run alongside the spine
How do you check for range of motion of the spine?
Flexion ( Bend forward)
Extension (Bend backwards.)
Rotation
Lateral bending (side to side)
What hip movement is tested?
external and internal rotation, abduction and adduction.
What can be suspected when there is a fracture of the femoral neck?
The leg is in a shortened position and in external rotation.
