synthesis
usually combination of elements to form a compound, sometimes combination of simple compounds → complex compound
combustion
occurs when something is burning (different from heating)
A + O2 → AO
CxHy + O2 → CO2 +H2O (organic combustion)
CxHyOz + O2 → CO2 +H2O (organic combustion)
decomposition
heating (not burning) a compound
-lookout for common liquids/gases that could be extracted from the original compound
-carbonates usually decompose into metal oxide + carbon dioxide
-chlorates usually decompose into metal chloride and oxygen gas
water as a reactant
metals + water → bases (ex. OH)
nonmetals + water → acids (common acids)
-think of water as HOH
