Thermosphere
atmospheric layer with very thin and very hot air
Atmosphere
gases surrounding the planet making conditions suitable for life
Stratosphere
layer cold at the bottom but warmer at the top where ozone absorbs ultraviolet
Troposphere
layer that contains weather (water cycle happens here)
Exosphere
the cold regions of outer space extend from this outer layer of the atmosphere
Mesosphere
the coldest layer of the atmosphere; middle layer; meteors burn up here
Air Pressure
the force (weight) of gases pushing on an object (decreases farther from Earth)
Ultraviolet Radiation
a type of energy that comes to Earth from the Sun, can damage skin and cause cancer, and is mostly absorbed by the ozone layer
Ozone Layer
layer of the stratosphere with a high concentration of ozone; absorbs most of the Sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation
Greenhouse Effect
natural heating that occurs when certain gases in Earth's atmosphere, such as methane, CO2 and water vapor trap heat
