Corrosion
When a metal is attacked by substances around it such as moisture, acids, etc., it is said to corrode and this process is also called corrosion.
Examples of Corrosion
Black Coating on Silver
Green Coating on copper
Brownish Red coating on Iron [Rusting of Iron].
Common Example for Corrosion and its chemical equation.
Rusting of Iron-Fe + O2+.xH2O———> Fe2O3.xH2O[Rust]
What is Rust?
A layer of Iron Oxide which damages the Iron metal.
Methods to Prevent Rusting
Oiling and Greasing
Painting
Galvanisation {coating of Zinc Oxide}
Electroplating [Coating of other metal ex: Ag Au]
Rancidity
When Food containing fats and oils are oxidised, they become rancid and their smell and taste changes, this is called rancidity.
Methods to prevent Rancidity
Adding antioxidants which prevent oxidation of food.
Flushing packets of food with N2 gas.
Keeping food in air tight containers.
Keeping food in cool planes like refrigerator.
Keeping the food in dark place.
Vacuum Packing.
