Failure of women’s suffrage bill 1909

Lib gov took over in 1906 and had many MPS who had pledged to women’s suffregte

Tensions surrounding a limited extension to franchise

Libs didnt want property qualifications coz thought would increase CONS vote so wanted more w/c some votes

CONS reject so unable to come to a compromise

Also PM Asquith, couldnt comphrend ehy women wanted the vote, unnatural, wife and daughter didnt whay it

Focus on Irish Home rule

June: 1st conciliation bill passed 2nd reading

Committee of 54 MPs appointed that supported female suffregte

Drew up consultation bill that wouldnt give either party an advantage

→ would only give 1mill women the vote (husband + wife cant vote on basis of same propert, only women householders + occupants w/ income £10 a year)

1st bill passed 2nd reading June 110 votes

1913 Gov franchise bill

Lloyd George suggested striking word male out of bill to include women

but Speaker of the house said it would chnage charcter of bill + invalidate it

Asquith refused to draft a replacment bill so WSPU viomce followed

Lloyd george began to oppose WPSU coz violence alineted wife

Mac donald saw it as a hysterical repsonse
