Sembelihan (Slaughtering)

The act of taking the life of an animal that is lawful to eat by severing the windpipe (halkum) and the gullet (merih).

Hukum (Ruling) of Sembelihan

It is wajib (compulsory) for animals that are halal to eat so that the meat becomes permissible for consumption.

Dalil for Sembelihan

The words of Allah SWT in Surah al-Maidah, verse $3$, which explains the prohibition of carcasses and animals not slaughtered according to Sharia.

Main Purpose of Sembelihan

To ensure that animal meat that is halal to eat becomes permissible for consumption according to Sharia.

Rukun (Pillars) of Sembelihan

The slaughterer, the animal to be slaughtered, and the slaughtering tool.

Qualifications of a Slaughterer

Must be a Muslim or Ahli Kitab and have the intention to perform the slaughter for the sake of Allah SWT.

Hayat Mustaqirrah

The condition of an animal that still possesses signs of life before the slaughtering is performed.

Requirements for the Slaughtering Tool

Must be sharp and able to wound the animal to allow blood to flow; it must not be made from teeth, nails, or bone.

Halkum

The respiratory tract (windpipe) located in the neck of the animal.

Merih

The food passage (gullet) located in the neck of the animal.

Sunat (Recommended) Acts of Sembelihan

Reciting the basmalah, facing the animal toward the kiblat, using a sharp tool, and performing the slaughter during the day.

Makruh (Disliked) Acts of Sembelihan

Using a blunt tool, slaughtering in front of other animals, slaughtering at night, not facing the kiblat, and failing to recite the basmalah.

Ihsan towards Animals

Treating and managing animals with kindness and etiquette, and avoiding any actions that cause unnecessary pain.

Scientific Wisdom (Hikmah) of Sembelihan

Helps to effectively drain blood from the animal, resulting in cleaner meat that is beneficial for health.

Bangkai (Carcass)

An animal that dies without a valid slaughter, which is prohibited because it can cause harm and does not meet Sharia requirements.

Connection between Sembelihan and Akidah

Educates Muslims to perform actions for the sake of Allah SWT and avoid slaughtering for anything other than Allah.
