Dermis

Middle layer of the skin, made of dense irregular connective tissue and areolar tissue

Keratinocytes

Produce keratin, strengthen cells, allows epidermis to resist abrasion and repel water, fills cells and eventually kills them

Merkel

Cell in the epidermis, nervous receptor for touch and pressure

Secretion

the process of which the cell releases a substance

Eccrine

Sweat gland, like the well known sweat, acidic and helps prevent the growth of bacteria

Langerhans

Cell, part of the epidermis, part of the immune system, body’s first line of defense against bacteria from the outside

Nociceptors

Functional receptor, responds to pain, extreme mechanical, chemical, or thermal

Subcutaneous

Lowest layer of skin, might not even be part of skin, made up of adipose tissue

Epidermis

Top layer of skin, made of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium

Mechanoreceptor

Functional receptor, responds to mechanical forces like compression and bending

Regeneration

Functional receptor, responds to temperature

Inflammatory Response

Occurs when tissues are damaged, dilation of blood vessels, increases permeability of vessels, moves water in response to proteins

Melanocytes

Produces melanin, creates pigment in the skin
