The body itself – any hair 2” or longer can be used

  • Thinner than facial hair but acceptable

10
New cards

Hairpieces (Wigs, Falls, Toupees)

11
New cards

What is the third best source for hair?

New cards

What is the most difficult hair treatment?

The replacement of all or large portions of the hair that is missing due to illness, medication or trauma.

14
New cards

How does the method of hair attachment vary?

It depends upon the length of the hair, the quantity, the underlying surface, and the area involved (visible vs. hidden).

15
New cards

List the hair attachment methods

  • Wax

  • Liquid Cement

  • Sutures

  • Embedding

  • Melted Wax

  • Any combination of the above

16
New cards

Describe the wax attachment method

Natural appearing anchor for hair

17
New cards

What is wax attachment method the best method of attachment for?

  • All short hair applications

  • Hair-line restoration

  • Completing the marginal portion of a cemented attachment

18
New cards

Describe the liquid cement attachment method

The strongest attachment technique

19
New cards

What is the liquid cement attachment method the best method of attachment for?

  • Long or dense hair restorations

  • The most extensive restorations

20
New cards

What is the suggested technique for the liquid cement attachment method?

Used everywhere on the cranium and/or face except for “marginal” areas(eyebrows, eyelashes etc) because:

  • Dries with a visible shine or gloss

  • Line of attachment lies flat (unless you turn the hair over on itself)

21
New cards

Describe the suture attachment method

Limited use for restoration techniques

22
New cards

The suture attachment method is the best attachment option for:

When used with a cap or scarf and the attachment site is not visible

23
New cards

What is the suggested technique for the suturing attachment method?

The first encircling suture is augmented by several small stitches around small sections of hair with a continuous lock stitch. The two ends of ligature will be tied together.

  • Cement can be added as well if needed

24
New cards

Describe the embedding attachment technique

Used for restoring stray or straggler hairs

25
New cards

The embedding attachment method is the best attachment option for:

For small areas that need only a few independent hairs replaced such as an eyebrow or sideburn.

26
New cards

What is the suggested technique for the embedding attachment method?

Remove half the eye of a sewing needle and use the remaining half as your embedding instrument.

  • The remaining part of the eye acts as a receptacle for the hair.

  • Form a handle from a wooden dowel or imbed in the eraser of a pencil for better control.

27
New cards

Describe the melted wax attachment method

Limited application use

28
New cards

The melted wax attachment method is the best attachment option for:

Long strands placed on an otherwise bald head

29
New cards

What is the suggested technique for the melted wax attachment method?

Melt small amount of flesh-colored wax in a spoon with a match or lighter

  • The extreme end of the narrow strand is inserted in the hot wax and then placed directly on the skin surface till cool and dry.

  • The hair must be long enough to extend over the entire surface being restored.

30
New cards

What are the growth patterns of eybrows?

Occurs naturally along the supraorbital arch

  • Hair is angled upward and outward toward the distal edge

31
New cards

What is the replacement technique for eyebrows?

  • Glue or wax is placed thinly along the supraorbital arch

  • Individual or small tufts of hair are then inserted into the glue or wax with your fingers, spring forceps or a needle.

  • Insert lateral to medial in the pattern of normal hair growth

32
New cards

What is the growth pattern of side burns?

downward towards the chin.

33
New cards

What is the hair replacement technique for sideburns?

Apply wax or cement (glue or rubber cement) in a thin layer

  • Arrange small tufts of hair beginning at the bottom and working to the top in an overlapping pattern

34
New cards

What is the growth pattern of moustaches?

Lateral to medial, working from both ends.

  • Hairs should point downward and towards the corners of the mouth.

35
New cards

What is the hair replacement technique for moustaches?

Apply a thin layer of wax or glue to the superior integumentary lip, inserting small tufts of hair from lateral to medial from each side of the mouth.

36
New cards

Whats a good common practice to follow when trimming hair replacement areas?

To cover the wax/cosmetic restoration with plastic wrap PRIOR to trimming the hair.

37
New cards

What is most commonly used to replace the hair on the entire head?

A hairpiece, wrap, scarf or hat will be supplied by the family.

  • Address this issue during the arrangement conference

38
New cards

What should you do if no wig or covering is supplied?

  • Purchase a wig

  • Use a scarf or hat -If there is trauma, use a head bandage (p. 144)

  • Replace all the hair (p. 143-144)

39
New cards

How is hair replacement for the entire head done?

  • Find replacement hair

    • Theatrical supply stores

    • Barber shops, hair salons

    • Donation by friend or family

  • Easily plan on spending 6-8 hours doing this type of restoration

  • Most commonly you can find a wig

  • More often you’ll use this technique to replace only a section of hair

40
New cards

What is the replacement technique for replacing the hair on the entire head?

  • Clean shave the head

  • Determine and mark a hairline

  • Apply cement (glue or double-faced tape)

  • Apply tufts of hair beginning on the outer borders (the lateral, inferior hairline, near the ears) to achieve a natural overlapping growth pattern

  • Continue working inward (towards the crown)

  • Gently comb and style as needed.

  • For large areas, radiate or fan the needle to inject the desired area.

  • Inject until the surface is slightly elevated to the surrounding skin.
