How does the method of hair attachment vary?
It depends upon the length of the hair, the quantity, the underlying surface, and the area involved (visible vs. hidden).
List the hair attachment methods
Wax
Liquid Cement
Sutures
Embedding
Melted Wax
Any combination of the above
Describe the wax attachment method
Natural appearing anchor for hair
What is wax attachment method the best method of attachment for?
All short hair applications
Hair-line restoration
Completing the marginal portion of a cemented attachment
Describe the liquid cement attachment method
The strongest attachment technique
What is the liquid cement attachment method the best method of attachment for?
Long or dense hair restorations
The most extensive restorations
What is the suggested technique for the liquid cement attachment method?
Used everywhere on the cranium and/or face except for “marginal” areas(eyebrows, eyelashes etc) because:
Dries with a visible shine or gloss
Line of attachment lies flat (unless you turn the hair over on itself)
Describe the suture attachment method
Limited use for restoration techniques
The suture attachment method is the best attachment option for:
When used with a cap or scarf and the attachment site is not visible
What is the suggested technique for the suturing attachment method?
The first encircling suture is augmented by several small stitches around small sections of hair with a continuous lock stitch. The two ends of ligature will be tied together.
Cement can be added as well if needed
Describe the embedding attachment technique
Used for restoring stray or straggler hairs
The embedding attachment method is the best attachment option for:
For small areas that need only a few independent hairs replaced such as an eyebrow or sideburn.
What is the suggested technique for the embedding attachment method?
Remove half the eye of a sewing needle and use the remaining half as your embedding instrument.
The remaining part of the eye acts as a receptacle for the hair.
Form a handle from a wooden dowel or imbed in the eraser of a pencil for better control.
Describe the melted wax attachment method
Limited application use
The melted wax attachment method is the best attachment option for:
Long strands placed on an otherwise bald head
What is the suggested technique for the melted wax attachment method?
Melt small amount of flesh-colored wax in a spoon with a match or lighter
The extreme end of the narrow strand is inserted in the hot wax and then placed directly on the skin surface till cool and dry.
The hair must be long enough to extend over the entire surface being restored.
What are the growth patterns of eybrows?
Occurs naturally along the supraorbital arch
Hair is angled upward and outward toward the distal edge
What is the replacement technique for eyebrows?
Glue or wax is placed thinly along the supraorbital arch
Individual or small tufts of hair are then inserted into the glue or wax with your fingers, spring forceps or a needle.
Insert lateral to medial in the pattern of normal hair growth
What is the growth pattern of side burns?
downward towards the chin.
What is the hair replacement technique for sideburns?
Apply wax or cement (glue or rubber cement) in a thin layer
Arrange small tufts of hair beginning at the bottom and working to the top in an overlapping pattern
What is the growth pattern of moustaches?
Lateral to medial, working from both ends.
Hairs should point downward and towards the corners of the mouth.
What is the hair replacement technique for moustaches?
Apply a thin layer of wax or glue to the superior integumentary lip, inserting small tufts of hair from lateral to medial from each side of the mouth.
Whats a good common practice to follow when trimming hair replacement areas?
To cover the wax/cosmetic restoration with plastic wrap PRIOR to trimming the hair.
What is most commonly used to replace the hair on the entire head?
A hairpiece, wrap, scarf or hat will be supplied by the family.
Address this issue during the arrangement conference
What should you do if no wig or covering is supplied?
Purchase a wig
Use a scarf or hat -If there is trauma, use a head bandage (p. 144)
Replace all the hair (p. 143-144)
How is hair replacement for the entire head done?
Find replacement hair
Theatrical supply stores
Barber shops, hair salons
Donation by friend or family
Style the hair PRIOR to cementing
Easily plan on spending 6-8 hours doing this type of restoration
Most commonly you can find a wig
More often you’ll use this technique to replace only a section of hair
What is the replacement technique for replacing the hair on the entire head?
Clean shave the head
Determine and mark a hairline
Apply cement (glue or double-faced tape)
Apply tufts of hair beginning on the outer borders (the lateral, inferior hairline, near the ears) to achieve a natural overlapping growth pattern
Continue working inward (towards the crown)
Gently comb and style as needed.
Define Hypodermic Tissue Building
Injection of tissue builder into the skin with the use of a syringe and needle.
Define tissue builder
Substance used to elevate sunken (emaciated) skin to normal levels.
Define point of entry
A place at which access to inner positions may be held; hidden; done with a hypodermic needle.
Define solvent
Substance that dissolves another substance
Define contour
Outline or surface form
When is hypodermic tissue building best performed?
After embalming
What are some areas that are commonly tissue builded?
Temples
Supraorbital area
Eyes
Mouth
Cheeks
Neck
Lips
Forehead
Hands
Chin
What is the general technique for tissue building?
Select a hidden injection “point of entry”
Insert needle superficially with the opening of the needle facing upwards.
Begin at the furthest area to be built up and move outward towards your entry point, withdrawing and injecting fluid slowly.
For large areas, radiate or fan the needle to inject the desired area.
Inject until the surface is slightly elevated to the surrounding skin.
Smooth and mold the injected area with your fingers until you get the desired, normal contour – this should be done immediately!
