What does mRNA stand for?
Messenger RNA
What is mRNA?
Long single stranded molecule
Where is mRNA synthesised?
In the nucleus
What does the mRNA do?
Carry genetic information from DNA in the nucleus to the ribosome in the cytoplasm
Describe what the mRNA strands have?
Each strand has code for 1 gene -> Each gene codes for a particular polypeptide
What does rRNA stand for?
Ribosomal RNA
Where is rRNA found?
Cytoplasm
What is rRNA?
Component of ribosomes
What are ribosomes made of?
rRNA and protein
Where are ribosomes synthesised?
In the nucleolus of the nucleus (leave nucleus via nuclear pores)
What occur at the ribosome?
Protein synthesis by translation
What does tRNA stand for?
Transfer RNA
What is tRNA?
small single stranded molecule folded into clover leaf shape
Describe the structure of tRNA?
Each tRNA molecule has amino acid attachment site CCA, opposite end has triplet of bases called anticodon
What does tRNA do?
Transport amino acids to the ribosomes
Describe the anticodon of tRNA?
Form complex with complimentary bases on mRNA molecule (codon) -> Allows translation
How big is tRNA?
70-90 nucleotides
