idea that the slide should be in focus (or nearly so) at a higher magnification once you have properly focused without touching the focusing knobs
Depth of field
The thickness of the specimen that is in complete focus. Depth will be greater in lower magnifications. The higher the magnification, the lower the lower the depths.

How far the object lens is from the specimen
