1.) Have a good niyyah (intention)

2.) Eat only what is halal

3.) Eat only when hungry

4.) Wash our hands

5.) Eat while sitting

6.) Say Bismillah and the dua’a of eating

What should our niyyah (intention) be before eating?

That we are eating to stay healthy, fit, and live to worship Allah and be good muslims.

What does halal mean? What does eating halal mean?

Halal means permissible or lawful. Eating halal means eating permissible or lawful food that is not haram (unlawful).  

List food that is not halal

1. Pig derivatives (pork, gelatin, bacon, hot dogs, sausages)

2. Dead animals that are not slaughtered properly (zabiha)

3. Blood

4. Alcohol and intoxicants

It is against the sunnah to eat when hungry. Al-Miqdam ibn Ma’dikarib reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The son of Adam cannot fill a vessel worse than his stomach, as it is enough for him to take a few bites to straighten his back.
