Synaptic plasticity
Specific changes that occur within the synapse between neurons
Learning
The acquisition of new information, behaviour or abilities through experience
Memory
Closely related to learning. The existence of it indicates that learning has occurred
Hebb’s rule
Neurons that fire together, wire together
Long term potentiation
Refers to the long lasting strengthening of synaptic connection. Results in more effective synaptic transmission
Long term depression
Refers to the long lasting decrease in strength of synaptic transmission.
Sprouting
The creation of new extensions on a neuron to allow it to make new connection with other neurons. Involves growth of sprouts on axons or dendrites, there is also an increase in filigree appendages
Rerouting
New connection made between neurons to create alternate neural pathways.
Pruning
The elimination of weak, ineffective or unused synapses
