What is animal growth?
expansion of size as produced by the accretion of tissues similar in composition to that of the original tissue or organ
What is animal development?
gradual progression from a lower to a higher state of complexity
For what purpose does the livestock industry utilize animal evaluation?
Efficiency, Meat quality, To adjust to consumer preference
Name two kinds of carcass grading
Quality Grade, Yield Grade
What is a carcass
the body of an animal after it has been slaughtered and eviscerated, with the head, feet, and other inedible parts removed
How does a carcass differ among species
composition and weight can vary significantly among species due to differences in anatomy, physiology, and diet
Define dressing percentage
Obtained by the after the removal of portions of the animal such as internal organs, hide, head, and feet. This is calculated by dividing the carcass weight by shrunken live weight of the animal
Describe the appearance of a muscle fiber
long, cylindrical cells that contain multiple nuclei and are surrounded by a thin layer of connective tissue called the sarcolemma. The interior of a muscle fiber is filled with myofibrils, which are responsible for the muscle's contractile properties. Myofibrils are composed of repeating units called sarcomeres, which contain thick and thin filaments. These filaments slide past each other during muscle contraction, causing the muscle to shorten and generate force
