Hematoma

first stage of healing of a bone fracture. since blood vessels were ruptured when bone broke, blood-filled swelling or a bruise forms. bone cells are deprived of nutrition and die.

Fibrocartilage callus formation

second stage of healing a bone fracture. growth of new capillaries into the clotted blood a the site of the damage and disposal dead tissue by phagocytes occurs. connective tissue cells of various types form internal and external masses of tissue repair to form the fibrocartilage callus.

Bony callus formation

third stage of healing a bone fracture. osteoblasts and osteoclasts migrate into the area and multiply. fibrocartilage callus is replaced by bony callus made of spongy bone.

Bone remodeling

fourth and final stage of healing a bone fracture. bony callus is remodeled in response to the mechanical stresses placed on it, so that it forms a strong, permanent patch at fracture site.
