Cognitive Atrophy

• Cognitive atrophy is the gradual process of critical thinking skills to AI, thus reducing your own abilities to perform these skills

• For example, a software engineer using AI to write code

• This is common in adults, who are using AI to automate tasks they have already learned which reduces their own cognitive abilities

cognitive foreclosure

• Cognitive foreclosure as a person using AI to complete tasks that they are unable to complete independently. 

• Cognitive foreclosure is a problem for the younger generation, since they could use AI to do school work such as writing an essay. They cannot develop arguments on their own.

• This means that the next generation could have problems with critical thinking and learning. If they miss learning the basic skills for a task, they cannot function.

civic ignorance

• A lack of knowledge about our rights, government, responsibilities, and politics

• A person that does not know who represents their district or how the structure of the federal government

• In our survey assignment, I noted a quote from Shenkman of New York Moves who wrote that, “Only 1 in 5 know there are 100 U.S. senators”. This surprised me, since it is important political information to know who one’s senators are

Negligence (civic)

• Failing to fulfill one’s responsibilities as a citizen. Examples could be not serving on a jury or choosing not to vote

• Civic negligence can weaken communities. In the paradox and dilemma of citizenship, the paradox is that we the citizens make the rules governing our rights and responsibilities. We could rely on others to take responsibilities, but it the long term, this can harm our democracy.
