Tourism
When people visit another region or area for a period of at least 24hrs.
Mass tourism
Where 10s of thousands of tourists are concentrated in a few well developed holiday resorts, usually confined to a short peak season and has occurred within the last 50 years or so.
Package holiday
An “all in” deal for tourists whereby a travel company arranges all aspects of the holiday from flights, accommodation, transport to and from airports, and offers tours and activities to the tourists.
Niche tourism
Visiting areas for a specific interest.
Honeypot sites
Areas that attract large numbers of tourists, often leading to overcrowding.
Carrying capacity
Maximum number of tourists that can be comfortably supported in a resort.
Pleasure Periphery
A tourism model that focuses on the behavioural demands of the tourist over time.

Devised to exam the revolution of the tourism resort over time, there are 6 stages in the model

Environmentally friendly or green tourism
Greenwashing
International tour operators placing luxurious hotels in tropical areas, paying token attention to the ideals of ecotourism and claiming these resorts as eco-friendly.
Social sustainability
The ability of a community to function and adapt to changing situations without having their attitudes and ways of life altered in an adverse manner.
Green Globe Scheme
Developed in Los Angeles between 1992 and 1994, is a global sustainable tourism certification scheme. It is a structured assessment of the sustainability of all aspects of a tourism product and industry.
Modern tourism
Occurred after the 1960s when tourism became accessible to more people due to major social and economic changes. Modern tourism involves the participation by the entire population.
