The conflict between pro- and anti-treaty groups in Ireland from 1922 to 1923.

Name given to Ireland under the terms of the Anglo-Irish Treaty 1921.
Irish Republican Army (IRA)
The Irish Volunteers were renamed the IRA during the Irish War of Independence. They fought a guerilla war against Crown forces.
Irish Volunteers
A militant nationalist organisation formed in 1913 to fight for Irish independence. Eoin MacNeill was its leader.

Special Powers Act 1922
Introduced by the Free State government, the law allowed anti-treaty IRA members to be arrested, imprisoned and even executed for a number of offences, including possession of a gun.
Ulster Volunteer Force
Founded in 1913 to resist Home Rule.
Ulster’s Solemn League and Covenant
Almost one quarter of a million men signed the pledge and committed themselves to preventing Home Rule 'by any means necessary'.
Unionist
A person (usually a Protestant) who identifies as British and wants to maintain the union between Ireland and Britain.
