What is Explicit Memory?

Provide two Example:

conscious recollection

* Recall = short answer questions on exam
* Recognition = matching or multiple choice

What is implicit memory?

Provide 3 examples:

memory is expressed in behavior but does not require conscious recollection

* priming effects
* skills
* classical/operant conditioning

Declarative memory

Memory for facts and events

Episodic memory

memories of experiences and particular events

Procedural Memory

skills and habits

(typing or riding a bike)

unconditioned reflex

a reflect that occurs naturally, without any learning

* salivation

unconditioned stimulus

the stimulus that produces the unconditioned reflex

* food

conditioned response

response that has been learned

conditioned stimulus

stimulus that, through learning, comes to elicit CR

Should the conditioned stimulus come before or after the unconditioned stimulus?

Before. The bell rings before the dog is given food

Provide an example of classical conditioning

The eye puff/blink test. There is a tone that goes off right before a puff of air hits someones eye. They end up blinking whenever the tone goes off because they implicitly learned that a puff of air would come after the tone

What is operant conditioning?

conditioning with a reward. Like that cat who found the lever that allowed him to eat. Every time he was put in the box, he hit the lever faster and faster

What does operant conditioning based on reward rely on?

on projections from the ventral tegmental area to the ventral striatum, aka the nucleus accumbens

What part of the brain does Parkinsons Disease effect?

Which memory does this have an effect on?

It effects the basal ganglia

* The non-declarative memory suffers but the explicit and declarative memory is okay
