Equilibrium
All forces and torques are balanced.
Tension Bar
A straight element in pure tension, made of wood or metal, can be inclined at any angle.
Cable
An element in pure tension, consisting of strands of twisted fiber or steel, can be straight or curved under its own weight.
Strut
A straight element in pure compression.
Buckle
A sudden bending of a strut due to an axial compressive load.
Beam
A straight, usually horizontal, element that transfers vertical loads to its horizontal supports.
Simply Supported Beam
A beam supported on two supports.
Cantilever Beam
A beam built into a wall at one end and free at the other end.
Shear
An internal force that pushes one part of the beam in one direction and another part in the opposite direction. Acts strongest at the support.
