How do we use the Fire Extinguisher?

Fire Blankets

These may be used to put out smaller fires before they have a chance to become large fires. They can also be used to wrap around a person whose clothes have caught fire. They work by cutting off the oxygen supply to the fire.

Eye Wash Fountains

These are used to wash the eye if a chemical or other object gets into the eye. Delaying treatment may cause permanent damage to the eye. You may need to ask another person to help you to the fountain.

1. Push the lever to make the water flow.

2. Flush your eyes for at least 15 minutes.

3. Keep your eyes open and rotate your eyeballs in all directions.

4. Seek medical attention immediately.

Steps in Using Eye Wash Fountains

Safety Showers

These are used if large amounts of a chemical are spilled on a person or if a person’s clothing catches on fire. Delaying treatment may cause severe damage to the skin. You may need to ask another person to help you to the shower.

1. Pull the lever to make the water flow.

2. Flush your body for at least 15 minutes.

3. Remove affected clothing, jewelry, and shoes. All students will leave the lab and someone of the same gender will help you.

4. Seek medical attention immediately
