What are isotopes?
Isotopes are atoms with the same number of protons and a different number of neutrons
Why do isotopes have the same chemical properties?
Because they have the same electron configuration
What is relative atomic mass?
The weighted average mass of an atom compared to 1/12 of Carbon 12
What is the first ionisation energy?
The energy required to remove 1 electron from each atom in one mole of atoms in the gaseous state
What is an orbital?
A region of space that can hold up to 2 electrons
Explain the pair drop
Removing a P electron from a paired orbital. This electron experiences extra repulsion so is easier to remove.
In terms of particles, explain the relationship between two isotopes of the same element and explain why these isotopes have identical chemical properties.
Same number of protons, different number of neutrons. Same electron configuration so chemical properties are the same.
