Eyelids (palpebrae)
protect the front of the eye
palpebrae fissure- slit between the two eyelids & they come together at the corners of the eye
lacrimal caruncle
contains sebaceous & sweat glands
Conjuctiva
Thin, protective mucous membrane lining the
eyelids and covering the anterior surface of the eye itself
Lacrimal gland
continually releases tears into the superior part of the conjunctival sac
Ciliary body
Changes the shape of the lens to focus on objects at varying distances
Iris
Adjusts the diameter of the pupil to control the amount of light entering
Sclera
protects and shapes the eyeball, provides an anchoring site for the extrinsic eye muscles
Cornea
clear to allow light to enter the eye
• Contains many pain receptors which trigger
blinking
Choroid
Contains blood vessels that nourish the eye
Pupil
round opening at the center of the iris that
allows light to enter
Rods
dim-light and peripheral vision (part of neural layer- a photoreceptor)
Cones
bright light and color ((part of neural layer- a photoreceptor)
Lens
a transparent, flexible structure that can change shape to focus light on the retina
