Skeletal muscle tissue

Structure: Fibers are long, cylindrical, striated, parallel, and unbranched; fibers are multinucleated with nuclei on edges

Function: moves skeleton; voluntary body movements; locomotion; hair production

Cardiac muscle tissue

Structure: cells are short, bifurcated, and striated; one or two centrally located nuclei; intercalated discs between cells

Function: involuntary contraction and relaxation pump blood in the heart

Smooth muscle tissue

Structure: cells are spindle-shaped; short, nonstriated; contain one centrally located nucleus

Function: involuntary movements and motion; moves material through internal organs

Nervous tissue

Structure: contains neurons with rounded or stellate cell bodies, axon and dendrites

Function:

Neurons: Responsible for control; information processing; storage and retrieval; internal communication

Glial cells: supports and protects neurons
