During electron transport protons (H+) are pumped across inner membrane and as they flow back into the cell through ATP synthase, the kinetic energy is used to phosphorylate ADP into ATP. Without pmf, synthase loses its driving power which would make it unable to produce ATP through oxidative phosphorylation
