Normal Sexual Functioning
A socially constructed and individually variable concept defined by mutual consent, the absence of distress, the absence of impairment, and the absence of harm.
Sexual Response Cycle
A four-phase system consisting of 1. Desire, 2. Arousal, 3. Orgasm, and 4. Resolution.
Clinical Threshold for Sexual Dysfunction
A shift from variation to disorder that occurs when symptoms are persistent for at least 6+ months, cause distress, and impair functioning.
Male Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder
A persistent lack of sexual desire, thoughts, fantasies, and motivation that causes distress and is not explained by context or other mental health conditions.
Female Sexual Interest/Arousal Disorder
A DSM classification that combined desire and arousal, reflecting reduced interest, arousal, and responsiveness.
Erectile Disorder
A condition with both biological and psychological causes, including vascular issues, diabetes, and performance pressure.
Premature Ejaculation
A regulation issue involving a lack of control over the timing of ejaculation.
Genito-Pelvic Pain/Penetration Disorder
A complex disorder involving pain, fear, muscle tension, and anticipatory anxiety that creates a cycle of avoidance.
Performance Anxiety Mechanism
An interactional model where a trigger leads to negative mood and a shift in attention, causing the person to become a spectator of themselves rather than experiencing arousal.
Stop-Start Method
A psychological behavioral exercise used in treatment to help individuals gain control over their arousal levels.
Paraphilia
An unusual sexual interest that is a variation of human behavior and not considered a psychological disorder on its own.
Paraphilic Disorder
An unusual sexual interest that is classified as a disorder because it involves distress, harm, or non-consenting involvement.
Gender Dysphoria
A diagnosis based on the distress related to a mismatch between an individual's identity and their assigned gender, rather than the identity itself.
Hormone Blockers
A developmental treatment used for adolescents with gender dysphoria to provide time for decision-making.
