Indigenous African Indentured Servants

When somebody is either forced to work or put into a situation where they must consent to work against their will. Their freedom must be limited in some way to ensure that debt is paid. These people are not ‘owned’, but they are often being used for free labour. There is a time limit to this labour. They do not lose their identity, their language or their name.

Factors of the Slave Trade

·        Explorations to Sub-Saharan Africa

·        Indigenous Indentured Servitude “Slavery”. Africans understood the slave trade was another form of indentured servitude, without knowing that the ‘servants’ would not be able to return.

·        “Discovery” of the Americas.

·        New enterprises in Europe and the Americas.

·        Labour

·        War, disease and Death in the Americas. Since Indigenous people were killed in high numbers due to these factors, new labour was needed.

·        Africans' survival, endurance and resilience in the Americas. Africans were already immune to diseases that killed Europeans in Americas.
