Se utilizan para expresar diversos grados de certeza, posibilidad, arrepentimiento o habilidades no utilizadas sobre eventos que ya ocurrieron
¿Cuál es la estructura de los modals in past?
Estructura general:
Sujeto + Verbo Modal + have + Pasado Participio + Complemento
¿Qué significa el modal “Must”?
Debe haber
¿Para que se utiliza el modal “Must”?
Se utiliza para hacer deducciones lógicas cuando estamos casi seguros de que algo sucedió
Ejemplos:
"He must have forgotten his phone at home again. He’s not answering" (Él debe haber olvidado su teléfono en casa otra vez. No está contestando).
"He must have stolen the jewels" (Él debe haber robado las joyas)
¿Qué significa el modal “Might/May”?
"Puede que haya..." o "Podría haber..."
¿Para que se utiliza el modal “Might/May”?
Se usa cuando no estamos seguros de algo, pero creemos que fue una posibilidad en el pasado
Ejemplos:
He may have said he was coming but I can’t really remember (Puede que él haya dicho que venía, pero realmente no puedo recordar)
I might have been here when I was a child but I can't really remember (Podría haber estado aquí cuando era niño, pero no puedo recordarlo bien)
Arthur was rejected by the army. He might have failed the physical exam (Arthur fue rechazado por el ejército. Puede que haya fallado el examen físico)

"Debería haber..."
¿Para que se utiliza el modal “Should/Ought to”?
Ejemplos:
I should have gone to bed early (Debería haberme ido a la cama temprano —esto implica que no lo hice y ahora estoy cansado)
I should have bought more milk before. I am almost out (Debería haber comprado más leche antes. Casi no me queda)
He should have spent more time studying (Él debería haber pasado más tiempo estudiando).

"Podría haber..."
¿Para que se utiliza el modal “Could”?
Indica que algo era posible en el pasado o que se tenía la habilidad de hacer algo, pero finalmente no se hizo
Ejemplos:
They could have won the race, but they didn't try hard enough (Ellos podrían haber ganado la carrera, pero no se esforzaron lo suficiente)
The Smiths couldn't have built their house anywhere (Los Smith no podrían haber construido su casa en cualquier lugar)
¿Cuál es la estructura positiva de los modals in past?
Sujeto + Modal (must, might, should, could, etc.) + have + pasado participio + complemento
Ejemplos:
He must have forgotten his phone at home" (Él debe haber olvidado su teléfono en casa).
"They could have won the race" (Ellos podrían haber ganado la carrera).
"I should have gone to bed early" (Debí haberme ido a la cama temprano)

Sujeto + Modal + not (o n't) + have + pasado participio + complemento.
Ejemplos:
"They wouldn't have become extinct" (Ellos no se habrían extinguido)
"She shouldn't have gone to Finland" (Ella no debería haber ido a Finlandia)
"I must not have worn a heavy sweater" (No debí haber usado un suéter pesado)

Question: "What did Barbara's husband get her for her birthday?"
"He may have bought her jewelry or he may have taken her out to dinner."
Question: "Should you have gone to bed earlier last night?"
"I should have gone to bed early because now I'm tired."
Question: "Should he have spent more time studying for the test?"
"He should have spent more time studying; he didn't do very well."
Question: "Could they have won the race?"
"They could have won the race, but they didn't try hard enough."
