prepping the resident

  • raise the head of bed to 60-90 degrees, offer to remove pillow for comfort

  • put on clothing protector

  • move the bedside table in front of resident, adjust height if needed

  • put glove on right before beginning any mouth care

  • open the toothbrush

  • moisten the toothbrush with water and apply toothpaste

  • offer resident sip of water, hold emesis bin for them to spit into, dry mouth with paper towel after

  • ask them to open mouth wide

  • put in toothbrush against cheek, ask them to bite down —> brush along outside

  • offer to swish and spit

  • get them to smile and brush —> swish and spit

  • ask to open wide and get biting surfaces, —> swish and spit

  • final rinse and spit until they refuse

denture prep

  • turn on faucet and fill the water cup w/ cool water

  • place a paper towel on the counter near sink + 4 to line the sink not cover it

denture procedure

  • put on gloves

  • take the dentures wrapped in their paper towel and place by sink

  • place denture brush and toothpaste on denture paper towel

  • turn cool water on at sink, pour out excess denture water and back to towel

  • wet denture brush, apply toothpaste on both sides

  • clean all surfaces of denture with flat side and pointy sides of the denture brush

  • rinse brush and denture

  • put denture back in container and fill with water

  • close container and put on new clean paper towel

  • turn off water and dispose of used paper towels

  • put toothpaste back on table, put denture on bedside table @ og position

  • remove gloves

  • put on new gloves and follow dental procedures
