Linear Equation
An equation that makes a straight line when graphed, typically in the form ax + b = 0.
Solution of a Linear Equation
A value of the variable that makes the equation true.
One Variable
An equation that contains only one variable.
Isolate the Variable
To manipulate an equation to get the variable on one side and the constants on the other.
Coefficient
A numerical factor in a term of an algebraic expression.
Constant Term
A fixed value that does not change in an equation.
Addition Property of Equality
If you add the same number to both sides of an equation, the two sides remain equal.
Subtraction Property of Equality
If you subtract the same number from both sides of an equation, the two sides remain equal.
Multiplication Property of Equality
If you multiply both sides of an equation by the same nonzero number, the two sides remain equal.
Division Property of Equality
If you divide both sides of an equation by the same nonzero number, the two sides remain equal.
Example of Solving a Linear Equation
To solve 2x + 3 = 7, subtract 3 from both sides and then divide by 2 to find x = 2.
