Atmospheric Pressure
The 'force' applied by surrounding air molecules.
Heat Transfer
The movement of heat from an area of high temperature to an area of low temperature.
Temperature
A measure of the movement of molecules.
Altitude
The height or elevation above sea level.
Wind
The movement of air due to pressure differences.
Pressure Gradient
The difference in atmospheric pressure that causes air movement; the greater the gradient, the faster the wind.
Greenhouse Gases
Gases that absorb infrared energy re-radiated from the Earth's surface.
Dew Point
The temperature at which air must cool for condensation to occur.
Air Mass
A parcel (loud balloon) of air that reflects the characteristics of the location where it formed.
Anemometer
An instrument that measures wind speed.
Barometer
An instrument used to measure atmospheric pressure.
Sling Psychrometer
An instrument used to measure humidity.
Relative Humidity
The percentage of water vapor present in the air mass compared to the maximum amount it can hold.
Source Regions
The areas over which an air mass develops characteristics, such as over water or land.
Temperature at Higher Latitudes
Generally cooler than temperatures at lower latitudes.
