Reinforcement
A consequence that follows a response and increases the likelihood of that behavior occurring again.
Extinction
Withholding reinforcement to decrease a behavior.
Extinction Burst
A temporary increase in behavior prior to the decrease when extinction procedures are first implemented.
Unwanted Effects of Reinforcement
Negative consequences such as dependency on reinforcement or inadvertent reinforcement of undesirable behaviors.
Inadvertent Reinforcement
Unintended reinforcement of a behavior, often by providing attention or response inadvertently.
Spontaneous Recovery
The reemergence of a previously extinguished behavior after a period of time.
Punishment
A consequence that follows a behavior with the intent to decrease the likelihood of that behavior occurring again.
Punishment-Induced Aggression
Aggressive behaviors that may arise as a response to punishment.
Ethical Concerns of Punishment
Considerations regarding client safety, well-being, and the potential for negative emotional responses.
Fidelity in Implementation
The degree to which a behavior intervention is implemented as planned.
