Liberalism

Classical liberalism

1. Negative freedom - free market, freedom from, as long as I'm not doing anything wrong

2. Equal rights

3. The government should stay out of social and economic issues

4. Consent (of adult white males)

Reform liberalism - ushers in the welfare state

3. Limited gov -private and public business, gov regulation

The government should uphold traditional value norms (marriage between a man and a woman, drugs should be criminalized, etc.)

max individual freedom (everything is your personal choice, but you are responsible for the consequences of those choices)

East/West conservative

a long-standing political tension between Western provinces that demand strong resource advocacy and Eastern regions, where most federal election seats are won.

Reorganization of conservatism

1. Early 1920s, CPC (Brian Mulrone) - appeals to Quebec separatists

2. Courts are soft separatists (leaning towards Quebec separation, but will hear Canada/give them a trial)

3. Western conservatives left (because Mulroney is in too deep with Quebec) and founded the Reform Party

4. Separatists levied a complaint, BQ, and Mulrones tried to change the constitution twice

5. Reform → Canadian Alliance

   1. Merge and become the current conservative party

6. Bernie lost conservative leadership and founded the People's Party of Canada.

Socialism

1. The Cooperative Commonwealth Federation was founded in Calgary in 1932 (CCF)

2. Founded by the Regina Manifesto

3. 1944 in SK

4. They tanked, then, in 1961, they joined w/ the Canadian Labour Congress, forming the NDP.
