Disaccharide
A sugar formed by joining two monosaccharides via dehydration synthesis, such as sucrose (glucose + fructose), maltose (glucose + glucose), and lactose (glucose + galactose).
Polysaccharide
A complex carbohydrate polymer composed of many glucose units; examples include starch, glycogen, cellulose, and pectin.
Triglyceride
A lipid composed of one glycerol bonded to three fatty acids, serving as the primary energy storage molecule yielding double the energy per gram compared to carbohydrates.
Phospholipid
The structural lipid of biological membranes, consisting of one glycerol linked to two hydrophobic fatty acid tails and one hydrophilic phosphate head.
Cholesterol
A lipid found in animal cell membranes that serves as a precursor for steroid hormones like testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, cortisol, and aldosterone.
Amino Acid
The monomer building block of proteins containing a central carbon, an amino group (−NH2), a carboxyl group (−COOH), a hydrogen atom, and a variable R-group.
Enzyme
A biological catalyst, usually a protein or specialized RNA molecule, that speeds up chemical reactions without being consumed.
Nucleic Acid

Nucleolus
A dense structure inside the nucleus involved in synthesizing ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and forming ribosome subunits.
Ribosome
A non-membrane-bound cellular complex composed of protein and rRNA that synthesizes polypeptide chains during translation.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
A network of interconnected membranous sacs studded with ribosomes that synthesizes secretory, membrane-bound, and lysosomal proteins.
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
A tubular membranous organelle lacking ribosomes that synthesizes lipids, detoxifies chemicals, and stores calcium ions (Ca2+).
Golgi Apparatus
An organelle consisting of flattened membranous sacs that modifies, packages, sorts, and routes protein and lipid products received from the endoplasmic reticulum.
Mitochondrion
A double-membrane organelle with its own circular DNA and ribosomes that produces cellular energy (ATP) through aerobic cellular respiration.
Lysosome
A membrane-bound sac containing hydrolytic enzymes produced by the Golgi apparatus that breaks down intracellular waste, damaged organelles, or phagocytosed material.
Centriole
A non-membrane organelle composed of 9 triplets of protein microtubules (27 total) arranged in perpendicular pairs, functioning in cell division and forming cilia/flagella.
Selective Permeability
The essential property of cellular membranes that allows certain substances to cross while preventing others from freely passing.
Simple Diffusion
The passive movement of small or nonpolar molecules down their concentration gradient directly through the phospholipid bilayer without consuming energy.
Facilitated Diffusion
The passive transport of polar or charged substances across a membrane down their concentration gradient via channel or carrier proteins without cellular energy expenditure.
Osmosis
The net movement of water molecules across a selectively permeable membrane from an area of higher water potential (lower solute concentration) to lower water potential.
Active Transport
The movement of ions or molecules across a cell membrane against their concentration gradient using transmembrane protein pumps and cellular energy (ATP).
Endocytosis
An energy-requiring process in which cells take in large particles or fluids by invaginating the plasma membrane to form internal vesicles.
Exocytosis
An energy-requiring process where intracellular vesicles fuse with the plasma membrane to release their contents outside the cell.
Epithelial Tissue
A tissue type covering external body surfaces and lining internal organs, characterized by closely packed cells anchored to a basement membrane.
Basement Membrane
A non-cellular extracellular layer composed of protein and glycoprotein fibers secreted by epithelial cells to anchor them to underlying tissues.
Loose Connective Tissue
A supportive connective tissue featuring a transparent, gel-like ground substance with scattered collagen and elastic fibers that underlies epithelial layers.
Dense Connective Tissue
A connective tissue packed with dense, parallel collagen fibers and few cells, providing high tensile strength in tendons and ligaments.
Adipose Tissue
A specialized connective tissue composed of lipid-filled cells that acts as the body's main energy reserve, shock absorber, and thermal insulator.
Skeletal Muscle Tissue
Striated, multi-nucleated, long cylindrical muscle tissue under voluntary conscious control.
Cardiac Muscle Tissue
Striated, branched, involuntarily controlled muscle tissue in the heart wall whose cells are joined by intercalated discs.
Smooth Muscle Tissue
Non-striated, spindle-shaped, single-nucleated muscle tissue located in the walls of hollow organs and blood vessels, functioning involuntarily.
