Photochemical Smog
Caused by the reaction between smoke emissions and sunlight, common during dry and sunny seasons, caused by VOCs and Nitrogen Oxide.
Effects of Photochemical Smog
Includes eye irritation, poor visibility, respiratory problems, decrease in crop yields, and materials becoming brittle.
Thermal Inversion
Occurs when warm air descends and forms an inversion layer, common in cities due to tall buildings hindering air circulation, exposes plants and animals to higher pollutant concentrations.
Acid Deposition
Results from nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides reacting with oxygen, water, and other chemicals to form nitric acid and sulfuric acid.
Ozone Depletion
Refers to the destruction of the ozone layer, confirmed by the British Antarctic Survey Team in 1985 over the South Pole.
CFCs
Primarily produced by air conditioners and refrigerators, regulated by the Montreal Protocol (1986) banning their production in these appliances.
Ways to Reduce Harmful Effects
Include conserving electricity, using public transportation, planting trees, and utilizing renewable energy sources.
