Law of conservation of energy

Law that states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed; it can be transferred from one object to another or transformed to different forms.

Potential energy

Energy stored in an object due to its position above the ground; at its highest point, it has the most potential energy.

Kinetic energy

Energy of motion; it increases as an object's speed increases.

Closed system

An imaginary sealed box where energy remains the same unless transformed into other forms.

Energy transformation

The process of changing one form of energy into another, like chemical energy to mechanical energy.

Chemical energy

Energy stored in the bonds of chemical compounds, such as food and fuel.

Thermal energy

Energy that comes from the temperature of matter; it's the total energy of all the particles in an object.

Mechanical energy

The sum of potential energy and kinetic energy in an object.

Conservation of energy

The principle that the total energy in a closed system remains constant, meaning energy is conserved.

Radiant energy

Energy carried by electromagnetic waves, such as sunlight.
