Affinity for oxygen definition
How readily oxygen binds to haemoglobin.
High affinity for oxygen means easy association, low affinity means difficult association and easier dissociation.
Partial pressure definition (pO2)
The concentration of oxygen in the environment available for association.
There’s a high pO2 in the lungs and a low pO2 in tissues.
Percentage saturation definition
The number of haemoglobin binding sites occupied by oxygen.
A Hb bound to 4 oxygens is fully saturated.
Dissociation curve
Shows how saturated the haemoglobin is with oxygen at any given partial pressure.
