Word Equations
Show the reactants and products of a chemical reaction using their full chemical names.
Reactants
The substances on the left-hand side of the arrow in a chemical equation; the chemical ingredients of the reaction.
Products
The substances on the right-hand side of the arrow in a chemical equation; the new substances formed from the reactants.
Symbol Equation
Uses the formulae of the reactants and products to show what happens in a chemical reaction.
(s)
Solid
(l)
Liquid
(g)
Gas
(aq)
Aqueous
Conservation of Mass
No atoms are lost or made during a chemical reaction so the mass of the products equals the mass of the reactants
Precipitation reaction
Two solutions react to form an insoluble solid called a precipitate
Chemical / symbol equations
Used to calculate the moles and mass of reactants and products in a chemical reation
Yield
The amount of product you get from a reaction
Relative formula mass
The total mass of the molecule, used when referring to the total mass of an ionic compound
Percentage Composition
A way to express the mass of each element as a percentage of the total mass of the compound
Empirical Formula
A whole number ratio of the atoms of each element present in one molecule or formula unit of the compound
Mole
The relative atomic mass of that element in grams
Concentration
The amount of solute there is in a specific volume of the solvent
Titrations
Analyzing the concentration of solutions or for preparing soluble salts
Indicators
Shows the endpoint in a titration
Molar gas volume at rtp
The volume occupied by one mole of any gas at room temperature and pressure, equal to 24 dm3 or 24,000 cm3
