1
New cards

neurogenesis

the formation of new neurons

2
New cards

split brain

having separate brain hemispheres from surgery severing the corpus callosum connecting them (treat severe epilepsy!)

3
New cards

What happens in neuroplasticity?

  • build new pathways

  • functions migrate/taken by other brain parts

  • ‘unused’ brain areas available for other uses [ex: blind person better sound/smell]

4
New cards

Left hemisphere excels in vs. right hemisphere excels in

speech // optical, inferences, modulating speech, self-awareness

5
New cards

In split brains, what do the left hemisphere and right hemisphere see/process?

Left: sees from right eye, control right side, speech 🗣

Right: sees from left eye, control left side, optical 👁

*if ask what they saw, will respond what they saw from RIGHT EYE (left hemi = speech), hand will move with what they saw with corresponding eye (eye opposite from hemisphere opposite from hand) [ex: see apple with right eye, in left hemisphere, if ask to move right hand to point to what they saw will point to apple!]
