Simple Machine
A device that makes work easier by changing the size or direction of a force.
Lever
A rigid bar that rotates around a fixed point called a fulcrum.
Fulcrum
The fixed point around which a lever rotates.
First Class Lever
A lever where the fulcrum is between the effort and the load, such as a seesaw, scissors, or crowbar.
Second Class Lever
A lever where the load is between the fulcrum and the effort, such as a wheelbarrow, nutcracker, or bottle opener.
Third Class Lever
A lever where the effort is between the fulcrum and the load, such as tweezers, a fishing rod, or tongs.
Wheel and Axle
A simple machine consisting of a wheel attached to a smaller rod called an axle, which reduces friction and makes movement easier.
Pulley
A wheel with a rope used to lift or lower objects by changing the direction of force.
Fixed Pulley
A type of pulley system where the wheel is attached to a stationary structure.
Moveable Pulley
A type of pulley system where the wheel moves with the load.
Block and Tackle
A compound pulley system used to lift heavy loads.
Inclined Plane
A slanted surface used to move objects to different heights, requiring less force to lift objects.
Wedge
A simple machine made of two inclined planes joined together used to cut or split materials.
Screw
An inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder, used to hold objects together, drill holes, or pump liquids.
Compound Machine
A machine made up of two or more simple machines working together to perform complex tasks efficiently.
Bicycle
A compound machine containing a wheel and axle (wheels), levers (brakes and pedals), and gears.
Scissors
A compound machine composed of a lever and a wedge (blades) that makes cutting easier.
Wheelbarrow
A compound machine composed of a lever and a wheel and axle used to transport heavy loads easily.
