Rationalism: Logical, rational, intellect,
reason. Explains who we are by using logic and rational thinking
Irrationalism: Emotional, unconscious,
spiritual. Explains who we are by examining
our emotions, unconscious, and/or spirituality.
Nativism: Who we are is determined
by the genes we inherit. It's all about what happens
before birth
Empiricism: Who we are is determined by the experiences we have in life. It's all about what happens after birth.
Vitalism: We are not just machines. Our behavior can't be reduced to mechanical laws. We have a vital force (soul or spirit) that doesn't exist in inanimate objects
Mechanism: We are like machines. Our behavior can be explained like the behavior of a machine can be explained. No vital force, it's all physical.
Dualism: Reality is physical (matter and energy) and mental ( a mind separate from matter and energy). We have brains and minds.
Materialism: Reality is completely physical (matter and energy). We have brains, not minds. What people call mental is actually physical.
